Interviews and observations made by the author in the late 1800s, form the basis for this unique booklet. The plants, their Indian names and pronunciations, along with their many uses for food and medicine, are organized by family. The interviewees were Yuki, who lived on the Round Valley Indian Reservation, and members of the Pomo and Yokia tribes in the Ukiah Valley. The author notes that these two regions in Mendocino County, California, differ from one another, and also vary from the coastal region where other California Indians lived and used a wide variety of plants. Permission to publish this unique booklet was given to the Mendocino County Historical Society by the Smithsonian Institution Press. It was originally published in 1902 by the United States Department of Agriculture, Division of Botany.
