Van Allen Murphey was known for her responsibility toward preserving the ancestral values, and the speech and culture of the Indians, when they were not widely appreciated, and of native plants. This biography traces Murphey’s early footsteps as a New Yorker, to her work as an ethnobotanist in most of the western states, and as a homesteader in northern Mendocino County. Photographs and hand-drawn images enhance each chapter.
